Crowns

What are Crowns?

A dental crown is a cover or ‘cap’ for a tooth that needs extra protection. This could be for a tooth that is worn down, cracked, weakened, or damaged. They may also be placed over a root canal treated tooth to provide extra coverage since the tooth is more delicate.

They can be made from many different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or metal. Some of these materials may be used together, for example, porcelain that is merged with metal.

How is a Material Chosen?

Your crown material is chosen by looking at several different factors. The location of the tooth, the gum tissue surrounding it, the size of the tooth, and the function of the tooth all affect material choice.

You may have more than one option for material selection. If this is the case, we will explain your options to help you decide on the best material for you.

Crown Appointments

Crowns will usually take two appointments to complete. At the first appointment, your tooth will be prepared for the crown. An impression will then be taken, which will be sent to the lab to fabricate a custom crown. Your dentist will make a temporary crown, which will be fitted over your tooth to protect it between appointments.

At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and the custom permanent crown will be placed on your tooth.
